This morning Dirk found, after a thorough check, that the steering axe of the T-Ford is broken, it needs to be welded and after a few hours of working on the car we are ready to go. Today it’s Arnaud’s turn to sit next to Dirk in the T-Ford, a real fun experience. The road was supposed to be good but the Chinese had the road under maintenance so large stretches were gravel and lose sand. When we arrived in the town Mega we decided that it was time to call it a day, Naty had found out that the latest part to the border it a bit dangerous to drive in the late afternoon. So tomorrow we’re going to wake up early to arrive at the border on time.

Na drie dagen met twee land rovers gaan we weer op pad met de T-Ford, we beginnen de dag echter met een bezoek aan de Konso stam. We gaan naar een dorp vlak in de buurt van ons hotel, een gezellig uitziende gemeenschap waar de hutjes vlak bij elkaar staan gescheiden door smalle steegjes. Het dorp is ongeveer 600 jaar oud, de bewoners houden dit bij door elke achttien jaar een boom te planten, een soort van kalender. Een grappig ritueel voor jonge mannen is het optillen van een zware steen en deze vervolgens over de rechterschouder te gooien als blijk dat zij krachtig genoeg zijn om te mogen trouwen. Wanneer dit lukt, wordt een geschikte partner uitgekozen door de ouders. Na dit bezoek gaan we echt op pad, 100 km onverharde weg, een ware aanslag voor de T-Ford, onderweg gebeurt er iets verschikkelijks; een vrachtwagen volgeladen met goederen komt ons met hoge snelheid tegemoet rijden, wij maken ruimte zodat hij ons makkelijk kan passeren, echter door de hoge snelheid en een steil aflopend taluut, raakt hij van de weg. In eerste instantie kan de chauffeur de wagen onder controle krijgen maar na een tweede slinger slaat hij voor onze ogen over de kop. De cabine is volledig verwoest, gelukkig komen beide inzittenden er met de schrik en wat schrammen er goed van af. Trudy verleent eerste hulp en waarna er een bus stopt besluiten we verder te reizen. Een hachelijk avontuur, voor hetzelfde geld, had hij de T-Ford of de Land Rover kunnen raken!

Back to Konso, we drive from Jinga and halfway we’re going to visit a local market. There are two tribes who come together to sell there goods. They are all dressed in there traditional clothes, a colourful spectacle.
Tonight we going to sleep early because tomorrow we’re on the road again, in three days we reach Kenia.

Today we visited the Mursi tribe, these people live quite isolated in the inlands of Ethiopia so we have a tough drive over bad roads and several rivers. We drive with the Land rover and a hired Toyota Landcruiser, the hired chauffeur in the Landcruiser is not well prepared for one particular river crossing, the car slides back into the river as he is trying to ride uphill. Trudy is still in the car! With some help of a bulldozer they are towed out of the mud. Seeing that we set the Land rover in low gear with the diff lock on, 50 cm of water and after that steep uphill through the mud, not any problem for our car!
The surroundings are beautiful, the drive through a national park and see a lot of wildlife; dik dik (a very small kind of deer), birds and even a turtle crossing the road (I almost flatten it). After tree hours we reach the Mursi tribe, the men are decorated with scars and the women wear big disks in there lips. They are almost completely depended of tourism and the only thing they say is: photo photo. Every picture you take costs 5 bir a person (25 euro cents). It’s a shame we didn’t learn anything about there culture but altogether it was a very special day.

We slept well in our luxurious hotel in Konso, we chose this place to store the T-Ford for a couple of days for we are going to visit some tribes and the roads to get there are not suitable for the old Ford. We drive to Jinga and meet a lot of kids on the way, who do the strangest things for a bit of money, even walking on sticks!
We sleep in a simple but fine hotel with warm water, nice!

Today we go from one resort to another, from Arba Minch to Konso, a relative short distance over a good road. Underway we meet a troop of baboons and a drunken police officer, the only one so far who want to see my international drivers licence.

We drove a large distance today, from Hosanna to Arba Minch, a spectacular drive over bad roads with large potholes and river crossings. This is driving throughAfrica! The land rover did not have any problems but for the T-Ford it was sometimes tricky, but Dirk and Trudy managed very well as you can see on the photos. We arrived in the late afternoon in a beautiful resort with spectacular view over the lake and its surroundings.
