Today we’re going to drive again, we’ve decided to attach the T-Ford with the triangle behind the Landrover and take a stretch of highway to make some kilometres. We pack everything and are ready in good time. Dirk-jan wants to start the Landrover, unfortunately it doesn’t give a damn. Battery flat… that means emptying the back seat again and getting jumper cables out. They get the Landrover going again. Then we’re really going, although we do stop at the gas station to refuel and buy oil. I walk to the supermarket further on to get something to eat for lunch. We take the highway towards the tunnels, just before the first long tunnel the Landrover gets a flat tire, rear right. Dirk-jan manages to park the cars safely on the hard shoulder. There you are, the tire at the back on the driver’s side is flat. Vests go on, hazard triangle is put down. Trudy and I sit behind the crash barrier with the children. Dirk and Dirk-jan move the T-Ford a bit to the back so that people can see sooner that something is wrong. And they are going to replace the tire, quite an exciting job with all that traffic rushing past and it is also a very narrow emergency lane. But Dirk and Dirk-jan are a golden team, they jack up the Landrover with 2 jacks (3.5 tons) and they replace the wheel. Within an hour we were able to continue driving. 200 meters further on is a parking lot, we first go there for a cup of coffee before we go into the tunnels. I had bought some delicious apple turnovers in honor of Dirk-jan and me being together for 17 years.
All in all, we drove 235 kilometres today, now a hotel in Rosenheim. We have a beautiful room with a 4-person bunk bed.
How lucky we were that we didn’t have that blowout in that first 6 km long tunnel.
Tomorrow towards France.
